MOXIBUSTION (MOXA)

It is a simple technique that entails the burning of dried mugwort leaves for it's therapeutical and warming properties

How is it done?

There are different forms of moxibustion, the most common being burning the herb in form of a stick close to certain acupuncture points or areas for therapeutic reasons. It can be done anywhere in the body, and sometimes along with other substances, such as salt, ginger or garlic.

What does it treat?

It’s warming characteristics are used for a variety of ailments, at the practitioner’s discretion. Helping fertility, correcting breech presentation, treating kidney conditions and boosting digestion and the immune system are a few common examples.

What should I expect?

The herb itself has a potent and distinctive smell. The treated area should feel warm. No pain should be felt in any part of the procedure as the amber does not touch the skin.

Did you know?

In some cases, practitioners roll the herb in a very small shape, thinner than a grain of rice, placing it directly on the skin before burning. That's usually referred to as "direct moxa", however, most western practitioners do not use this technique.
